How much does a small business website cost in Australia? (2026 guide)
A plain-English breakdown of what Australian small businesses pay for a website, including domain, hosting and the hidden costs, with real price ranges.
"How much is a website?" is the first question almost every business owner asks us. The honest answer is that it depends on what the website needs to do. Here's a breakdown in Australian dollars, GST included, so you can budget with confidence.
The short answer
- Simple business website (1–5 pages): roughly $500 to $2,000 with a small studio, or $3,000+ with a traditional agency.
- Business site with bookings, quotes or a menu: roughly $1,500 to $5,000.
- Online store: roughly $2,500 to $10,000+, depending on how many products you sell and which systems it connects to.
- Custom software or web app: usually $4,000 and up, priced on the features you need.
Then there are the yearly running costs: your domain name, hosting, and any software subscriptions.
What you're actually paying for
A website quote usually bundles several things together. Knowing what they are helps you compare quotes properly.
- Design: how it looks, and whether it feels trustworthy on a phone. Most of your customers will see it on a phone first.
- Build: turning the design into a fast, working website.
- Content: writing the words and sourcing photos. This is often the part that delays a project.
- Features: online booking, quote forms, payments, menus or a customer login.
- Setup: connecting your domain, email, Google Business Profile and analytics.
- Support: fixing problems and making small changes after launch.
The yearly costs nobody mentions
- Domain name: a
.com.aucosts around $15–$40 a year. You'll need an ABN to register one. - Hosting: from about $100 to $700 a year, depending on speed, backups and support.
- Business email: Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace costs roughly $9–$20 per person per month.
- Plugins and apps: booking systems, online shops and premium themes often have their own monthly fees.
Always ask: "What will I pay every year after launch?" A cheap build with expensive renewals isn't cheap.
DIY builders vs paying someone
Website builders like Wix or Squarespace look cheap at $30–$60 a month. But you do all the work, you pay that fee forever, and you can't easily move your site elsewhere. They suit some businesses, but if your time is worth more than a few hundred dollars, a one-off professional build often works out cheaper over two to three years.
How to avoid getting burned
- Make sure the domain is registered in your name and your ABN, not the developer's.
- Get a fixed quote in writing, with what's included and what costs extra.
- Ask who owns the website once it's paid for. It should be you.
- Check it on your phone before you approve it.
- Don't pay 100% upfront. A deposit and a final payment on approval is standard.
